When Julius “Juice” Butty was 12, he and his friend were recording and mixing tracks through his parents home stereo with nothing more than a mic input and a tape deck. A few years later, he bought a four track recorder when he aimed to record his band’s demo. The seeds were planted.
At age 22 he got the first real taste of the studio life at Shot Gun Studios with a producer named Johnny B. Asked to produce demos for some of his friends, Juice spent a little time on the other end of the glass in various studios around Southern Ontario. He then went on to work for four years at YTV/ Corus Entertainment as a freelance Editor /Engineer, and eventually opened Silo Recording Studios in Hamilton, Ontario.
While honing his recording chops, Juice formed the band Straitjacket, which then became Michelin Slave. A number of years later he formed his current band Hypodust, producing their debut record “Here Comes The Pain”; a blistering sonic display of sheer metallic intensity.
In 2004 Juice got his first big break co-producing the debut album “Watch Out!” for Alexisonfire, which to date has sold over 100,000 units (Canadian Platinum), and won the Juno Award for “New Group Of The Year”. That led to him co-producing the debut solo record for Dallas Green (City & Colour) which has gone Multi-Platinum in Canada, and Protest The Hero's "Kezia" (Vagrant/Universal) and their latest “Fortress” (Gold in Canada on Vagrant). Sticking with a winner, Juice co-produced Alexisonfire's release "Crisis", (Distort Ent/Universal), which debuted at #1 in Canada, and was also released in the US by Vagrant/Universal. The record went Gold in just two weeks, and has now achieved Multi-Platinum status as well.
Currently, Juice produced the new Alexisonfire album “Old Crows/Young Cardinals” for Dine Alone in Canada and Vagrant in the US (Platinum in Canada). Guitarist Wade McNeill, from Alexisonfire, asked Juice to produce his solo project, The Black Lungs (Dine Alone). Most recently Juice produced a full length album for the Vancouver-based band Callahan being released by Roadrunner in 2010. Upcoming projects include the debut for Clothes Make The Man and Theset.
The Juno awards in 2007 honored Juice with a nomination for Producer Of The Year, and Dallas Green’s “Sometimes” won “Best Alternative Album”. This speaks to the fact that Julius Butty’s cutting edge approach to making records makes him stand out amongst the pack, and has made him one of the top producers in Canada. Expect big things from him.
